Eat Local, Eat Seasonal!
Summer is my favorite time of year for many reasons. It's sunny and warm and, for a brief three months, it barely rains here in Oregon. I love spending my days in the sun, or out hiking through the forest, or sitting in the sand along the river. I also love going to farmers markets and sampling all the fresh, local fruits and vegetables!
Berries, stone fruits, melons, figs--summer is a time of sweet, sun-warmed, local fruits. Eating local means the food is fresher and more nutritious, and that it doesn't have to travel as far (and therefore reduces greenhouse gas emissions).
And, by eating local and in season, you ensure that your diet has some nutritional variety in it throughout the year, and you also get to support small farmers with sustainable growing practices rather than mega-farms thousands of miles away!
This guide focuses on cultivated fruits. A few weeks ago I posted my guide to summer vegetables, and soon I'll be posting my guide to wild berries!
